I have a feeling that 2012 is going to be a good year.

I am going to start it with an amazing opportunity

to show some new work in a great gallery, Loft 204.

The opening is Friday February 3rd at 6 - 9PM.

There are pieces great (hopefully) and small

with all the colors of the rainbow.

Also showing is the amazing ceramics artist Gina Lawson Egan.

It should be a very fun and awesome show.

Saturday December 10th is going to be a busy one.

I have a piece at Gallery Nucleus in the show

The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Me

A Jim Henson Tribute Exhibition.

I chose to do a rainbow of Muppets.

These characters were so fun to draw and cut.

Hopefully this isn't the last time I ever draw a muppet.

This show has an great line up and from the preview pieces

that I've seen this is going to be an amazing show!

That same night I have 5 Post Its

in the Post-It Show 7 at Giant Robot 2.

Here they are all together.

I didn't think I was going to get much detail on

such a small piece of paper but I think I did alright.

There are 1000's of pieces and most Post Its are only $20 each!

It's a family show with my grandfather-In-Law and

my brother-in-law. Both great artists.

iPhone wallpapers for Poolga.

It's an amazing resource of great art work

for your tiny talking device.

I wanted to design some before and after scenes.

I've been drawing a lot of bugs lately, so I chose

to incorporate them into seasonal garden wallpapers.

The Washington Post - Local Living

I had the awesome privilege of illustrating

the cover of the Washington Post's Local Living.

It is their Back To School edition. I was asked to create

the words "back to school" with school supplies.

I also illustrated a stack of books for the table of contents...

And the section headers:

I thought it was going to be a big challenge to try and integrate

all of the back to school supplies but once I made a list of

everything I could draw, it was smooth sailing.

Ten Paces - Trelawney

I did this for the great blog, Ten Paces. It has a great concept.

You do a sketch and then you switch sketches.

Mine's based on a sketch by the always amazing

Alyssa Nassner, who also runs Ten Paces.

I was lucky and Alyssa finished my sketch.

Here is her finish. sigh... So good.

Harry Potter Tribute Show

Here is a piece I did for the

Harry Potter show at Gallery Nucleus.

I didn't want to just do a piece with Harry Potter in it.

I wanted to do a piece for the die-hards. This is the book

that Umbridge gives out when she becomes the Defence

Against the Dark Arts teacher. I thought that this was a

major turning point in the whole series because

you can plainly see that the Ministry is meddling.

And it's all downhill from there.

If you are in the area and even remotely like Harry Potter,

definitely come to the opening. It's going to be amazing.

So I had this concept of a theatre and ran with it.

Paint The Town 2011

I have the great opportunity to be a part of

Snell & Wilmer's3rd annual Paint The Town

in Las Vegas. It is a fundraiser for the

Andre Agassi Foundation for Education.

The theme is "Vegas, My Love" so I did some pieces

of classic Vegas signs that have been torn down.

I also did a piece of the Luxor.

This light was the first thing I saw of Vegas from

waaay far away and I always thought it was cool.

I don't know if you can bid on them if you aren't

actually there but you can visit the site.

If you really like any of the pieces, there

is a phone number you can try. It's for a good cause.

Those people who live in or around Vegas, come

out Saturday night and have a good time.

This was to design a VHS cover so I wanted

mine to look kinda 80's. I think I pulled it off.

at Gallery Nucleus. It runs May 14th - June 6th.

I'm proud of my pieces. I choose to do a space theme.

I wish I could finish it out and

do a whole kids space alphabet book.

It has been quiet on the blog but not from lack of work.

There has been lots going onto the cutting room floor,

which in this case is a good thing.

Here are some ideas I had for some memory cards

and a puzzle with a sea life theme. You know, for kids.

These monster letters were done as commissions

for some boys rooms. They were super fun to do.

GOOD Magazine - Smart Meters

I did some illustrations for the 022 issue

of GOOD Magazine. The article is on smart

electric meters that read and analyze

your electricity use in real time.

I went kinda crazy with sketches cause they

were really really ridiculously fun to draw.

They liked them so much, they asked that I

draw/cut three of them to keep their character.

I loved doing all three and I could have done

way more of these. They ended up only running

the last one with the multiple meters but I think

it looks super cool in the magazine.

Thanks to Atley for the great art direction.

He's a good dude and a snappy dresser.

BLUECANVAS Launch Event

Christmas Time Is Here

I've been busy lately.

I recently did a piece for the cover of the holiday

gift guide for The Los Angeles Times Books section.

It was fun to do and I like the way it turned out.

It ran in the Sunday paper. I didn't get to see it

but you can see the online version here.

I love cutting snowflakes.

I feel like I'm not supposed to, but I do.

I also just did an illustration for the Travel

section of The New York Times.

The article is on ski deals and can be found here.

This was pleasantly difficult to cut, which made it

really awesome to work on. I like a challenge.

I've never been skiing but me and my friend

once nailed some shoes to a skateboard.

We took it to the snow and... not the greatest

idea we ever had. All I'm going to say.

My wife had our second baby, a girl, on October 13th, 2010.

She is itty bitty, as she is about five weeks early, but she is

doing well. My wife's nickname is Champ so I think she

inherited that from her. Plus she is super cute.

Big brother is pretty happy about it too.

Two Shows, One Week

I am part of two different shows this week.

The first one is the Art Center College of Design's

80th Anniversary Illustration Showcase.

I am extremely honored to be a part of it.

There are so many extremely talented people that

graduate from there and I am more then delighted

to be a part of this amazing roster.

The second show is at Double Punch Gallery in

San Francisco on Friday, October 15th.

It also has an awesome cast of characters.

I will have this guy showing along with one

of my first wallpapers. Horray for dinosaurs!!!

I've been doing lots of new work, tons of

commissions, and some secret stuff .

There's also new paper cuts for sale at my shop.

I've been framing some of the wallpapers from earlier

in the year along with other new pieces.

My Picture Book Report

I kicked off a new feature on the amazing website

Picture Book Report. It's a short report! I wanted to

call it "The Schorr Report" but ringleader Meg Hunt

said other non-Schorr people are going to do it too.

Then I was like "Get Todd Schorr!" I guess he's busy.

I created an illustration about The BFG by Roald Dahl.

It's a story i've loved for a long time and Quentin

Blake's illustrations have always been an inspiration.

It was fun to draw. I can't wait to see other

people's reports. If you have never seen the

Picture Book Report before, you're missing out.

Take the day off and read through everything.

You deserve it.

Robyn/ Kelis - All Hearts Tour Poster

I've always wanted to do concert posters.

I got this Emek poster for my 16th birthday and

I remember just sitting there running my fingers

across all of the beautiful silkscreened ink.

Some people have Hustler, others have silkscreen.

So I jumped at the opportunity to create a poster

for Robyn and Kelis' All Hearts Tour.

Here's the sketch just to prove my finish isn't

always as close to the original sketch.

Sometimes it's just an idea.

These were rips that would reveal the artist's

name underneath in different type.

I think the type turned out great.

It's very eighties but fits with

both women's current aesthetic.

I also created a black version.

The poster got killed but it was still fun to

work on. Thanks to AD Mary and Robyn for the

great opportunity.

NPR Calendar 2011

I had the great opportunity to create an

illustration for the 2011 NPR calendar.

The list of illustrators in this calendar is a dream team:

Jeremy Holmes, Junichi Tsuneoka, Matte Stephens,

Gwenda Kaczor, The Heads of State, Ed Parker,

You Byun, Josh Cochran, Andrew Holder,

Christoph Niemann, and Jing Wei.

I'm so proud to be among them.

They wanted an illustration about how NPR

affects my life. Here's my sketch.

The finish turned out pretty close to the sketch.

The colors in the calendar are a little lighter then

the original but I think it helped it look older

which is good. I'm so honored to be Mr. January.

I never ended up using for one reason or another.

Most of them are good ideas but just didn't work but

most of the time it was cause none of them could smile.

K. Sad Sack - People are repelled by hobo culture.

I have been having major computer problems for

a couple weeks now. It's the reason I didn't have a

wallpaper last week and this week is a little different.

It is the "Bonus Material" of wallpapers.

I did it but it just didn't fit but I really like the colors.

In other news I had a great Father's Day.

I ate at the Blue Bayou in Disneyland.

It is AMAZING!! You can't make a bad collage with it.

I took a sick day last week but that doesn't

reading a whale-load of comics. I'm talking about

relationship crushing amounts of comics. I've also been

drawing like crazy for the second Super Cool Spy Club.

a spy. Or do we?

The oil spill in the Gulf Coast is horrendous.

I read an article that some of the only animals in

the nearby water that could escape the initial blast were

the whales. Everything else almost instantly choked to death.

This is so sad and is only going to get worse

before it gets better.

These last three 45's are all paper. Record grooves and all.

The opening was amazing. There were tons

of great people and such incredible artwork.

It's such an honor to be a part of.

On May 1st there is going to be a free

performance by Portugal the Man at the gallery.

It should be wicked fun.

I had the awesome opportunity to do a few illustrations

for the magazine Edutopia. Edutopia is a George Lucas

Foundation with the goal of improving public schools and

public education. The article I illustrated is about the myths

of the common cold. Thanks to Maili for the sweet job.

Wallpaper Wednesday - Monster Alphabet

My Poketo Wallet

Here's the big news I was talking about before.

I have the amazing privilege of being part of Poketo's Papercut Series.

They asked four different artist, who work with cut paper, to make

wallet designs for them.

This is the outside of the wallet:

And here is the wallet. It comes with a button.

I can't be more proud to work Poketo.

I think the wallet turned out looking pretty amazing.

I hope you do to. Go forth and buy.

I also did a fun little interview with them about my process and

life and such. I made some exclusive paper cuts that go with the

answers. My favorite to do was this recreation of a wonderful

photograph by the uber-talented Ryan McGinley.

P.S. I have a funny story about this wallet. I needed a wallet really bad so I tried to win one over here but to no avail. So I told myself, "Well if I can't win a wallet and I can't afford one, maybe I'll send in my work and they'll make one with my work on it." Ah, arrogant pipe dreams. In the meantime, I vented about which SPACETIME wallet I wanted here on zee blog. Well my wife bought it, unbeknownst to me. So then I get a package in the mail a few weeks later and there was the wallet. Confused, I go to email my wife at work, to see what the deal is, and there in my inbox is an email from Poketo asking if I would like to design a wallet. I was stunned at the timing of it. All the stars definitely aligned for this one.

Wallpaper Wednesday - Snake Paper

I know I said there were going to be two wallpapers but I

something got in the way of that. That something is called LOST.

I did get one wallpaper done. And that's enough.

My inspiration for this one was to make something that could

easily be made digitally. So I kept it simple, with straight lines

which even with a ruler, are hard to cut because they are so small.

Upcoming Shows

I have a couple of shows coming up that I am happy to announce.

Both of them are at Nucleus. The first is a group show titled

Curiouser and Curiouser: Inspired by 'Alice in Wonderland'

It runs from February 27th - March 29th

and the opening reception is on the 27th from 7PM - 11 PM.

I'll post my piece in a few weeks. It's pretty sweet. I think.

Then I have the amazing pleasure of being one half

of a two man show titled The Untold Want.

The other half is the awesome Sean Chao.

The show will take place in the upstairs

gallery on March 13th - March 29th.

Opening reception is March 13 7PM - 10PM

Wednesday Wallpaper - Do Good

This one took a while to make but I think it's my favorite so far.

There is a lot going on, but hopefully it will be on your desktop

long enough to find new things every time you go to the computer.

So most weeks I show a sketch or an idea but today I'll show you my

inspiration. When I saw this pattern by internet friend Andy J. Miller

I was struck but it, and immediately put it as my own wallpaper.

It's been on my computer for almost three weeks and I still

like looking at it and finding new things. So that is what I

wanted to tray and accomplish as well. A wallpaper that is

fun and that you can explore, which is kind of a foreign concept

in regards to desktop wallpaper. We'll see if it works for you.

The New York Times Sunday Styles

I did an illustration for the cover of the Sunday Style

section of The New York Times.

The article is about trimming your list down to fit

financial needs. It's something my whole family

is doing this year (kids only) so I can relate.

So they wanted Santa's list with names falling off

and turning into snowflakes.

Done and done.

This is a picture I took while I was cutting out all the names.

I got lots of Style section kids on the list and some family and friends.

I also got S. Britts Eddy making his way off of the list.

Sorry Eddy you've definitely been naughty.

The finish turned out really nice.

The snowflakes were the hardest part but I

think the variety of them is fun.

It looks amazing in the paper.

(I know I use the word amazing a lot but

I am always amazed at how lucky I am.)

Power In Numbers 4

This coming saturday, I am part of a big

group show at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra.

Every piece is 5"x7" and are priced at $100.

All proceeds benefit the Red Cross.

I wanted to create a series,

so I decided to do stacks of animals.

I also choose the color palette for each

based on the four seasons.

I had done a crocodile pile in the past

and wanted to take another stab at it.

I also did a Yak Stack

and a Sheep Heap.

For the fourth one I was going to do a Hound Mound

(which I will probably still do) but I decided to

cut a title of sorts instead.

Sometimes Things Just Start To Pile Up

When I put them all together they reminded me

of the set of Yo Gabba Gabba. Completely unintentional.

Now if I could only get DJ Lance Rock behind my work.

GO Magazine

I got a call to do some cut paper snowflakes.

The scientific kind. Mmm...Science.

Go Magazine, which is an in-flight magazine,

asked me to illustrate the four types of snow:

Graupel

Needles and Plates

Stellar Dendrites

and Puff Balls.

The puff balls were by far the hardest thing I've cut

in a while, as the actual pieces are about 5" across.

I would love to get more science type work.

It's a nice challenge.

BUST Magazine

I had the awesome opportunity of working for Bust Magazine.

The article is about DIY-ing the major events of your life.

So I just had to work marriage, childbirth, and death into

one illustration. No big deal. Skulls, babies, and wedding veils

are like the perfect illustration ingredients.

I thought that all three events have invitations.

I wanted to make it look like invitations that ripped away

showing the other invitations for the other events.

Kinda confusing but I had a vision

Here's my sketch.

I put in the colors so the AD would know what I was thinking.

Finish:

I like seeing how close the finish can be to the

sketch and this one is pretty close.

I think the only thing I changed was her lipstick.

I couldn't be more happy with the finish.

The torn paper looks good (I was hesitant), the shadows turned out

nice, and best of all, the articles message gets across with one image.

They did a hell of a job with the spread too.

The titles and the colors from the illustration

all working together look pretty awesome.

I also got the honor of being on the contributor page.

I had to take a picture for it so I rolled out of bed and took one:

It was a fun fun fun job.

I made some pocket mirrors for the ladies and the ladies men.

I made a set for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

but decided not to use the paper cut I made for dinner.

Too many animals eating other animals.

They were fun to make and I think they turned out really nice.

The New York Times 2009 Holiday Gift Guide

I worked many moons on the 2009 Holiday Gift Guide

for The New York Times. It's a project that has evolved a lot.

I was asked to do 6 illustrations for each category:

Electronics, Books, DVD's and VideoGames,

Dining and Home, Music and Theatre, and Style.

So my idea was to have an illustration encapsulated

inside a special snowflake. For example, the category of

Dining and Home would have a cutlery snowflake.

They turned out way better then I could have hoped for.

The snowflakes are cool and complex enough

that they have a good second read.

They ended up not fitting in their intended space.

So I went back to the drawing board to maximize

and simplify. The three they are using right

now are these (with more to come)

They're different but good.

The pie turned out looking especially neat.

I also ended up doing the header to unify the

entire Gift Guide. They had a preexisting grid they

used so I just cut it and made it my own.

It looks small here but is much bigger on the actual site.

It turned out really nice.

Cutting type out of paper is extremely satisfying.

It took on many different phases and was a fun

project to work on. I think that simplifying everything

really helped it in the end.

It's nice to see a project evolve and all the work that

it took to get the final result.

WIRED Magazine

I got the amazing opportunity to

illustrate for the new WIRED Magazine.

The article is about Tim and Eric Great Show, Awesome Job!

I've been a fan of Tim and Eric since Tom Goes To The Mayor,

so it was perfect when the Art Director called

and told me about the job and that I had to watch

all the episodes and go crazy with the illustration.

I had to do one full page title, an itty bitty illustration

(itty bitty being AD lingo), and a drop cap.

I sent in one sketch, with all the elements that I

could fit from the show. There was tons more stuff

I could have put in this illustration.

Then I cut it. Dimensional things got worked out but everything

stayed from the sketch. I'm proud of how the type looks

and all the details turned out pretty cool.

For the drop caps, I figured it would be easier

for me to just start cutting.

These are the sketches/finishes of the letter I:

They chose the furry one in a puddle of blood at the bottom.

I like how they all look laid out together.

As for the itty bitty illustration:

It was a pretty amazing job and it looks nice

in the magazine next to the picture of Eric.

SPACETIME Wallpapers

Over at Kitsune Noir, he had a wallpaper contest

for his recent project for Poketo!

There are four amazing artists involved with the project:

Cody Hudson, Mike Perry, Damien Correll, and Andy Miller.

So I made a couple of cut paper wallpapers with the

hopes of winning some cool Poketo! gear (i need a new wallet.)

I didn't win but I still like my wallpapers (and still need a new wallet.)

The second wallpaper is just part of a larger, nine foot long piece.

Maybe I won the contest in some other SPACETIME continuum.

The Good 100

I got the amazing privilege to work at Good Magazine

for a few days cutting paper and meeting some really cool people.

It was a great new space with a good vibe and a ton of paper.

We were making 100 different paper sculptures

for 100 different good world issues/solutions.

There was about 25 of us just cutting and gluing to our hearts content.

I did about a dozen said sculptures.

Some of the illustrations on the cover are also

spots for the articles in the inside.

My contribution to the cover? The carrot by my thumb.

It's funny to see them in the magazine because they are so small.

The steak here is actually like 14 inches long and

the football helmet is probably a foot tall.

It reminds me of Aladdin when the genie says

"Infinite cosmic power. Itty bitty living space."

I guess I'm kinda glad my paper cuts don't have infinte cosmic power.

That would be a lot of pressure.

I do think that these turned out pretty nice.

It was another awesome job with Good Magazine.
